Last Updated 06 December 2017, 02:28 IST

Tight security arrangements are in place in the twin towns of Faizabad and Ayodhya on the eve of 25th anniversary of Babri Masjid demolition on December 6.

According to official sources here on Tuesday, searches were conducted at 'dharmshalas' (inns), hotels and lodges by the security personnel.

Police put up barriers at all exit and entry points into the twin towns and vehicles were being subjected to extensive checking before being allowed in, sources said.

Security was beefed up at all important buildings and markets, including bus and railway stations, temples and ashrams and a strict vigil was being maintained, the officials said.

"Ayodhya and Faizabad have been put on high alert...the district has been divided into four zones, each of which will be under the charge of a zonal magistrate,'' a senior police official said in Faizabad on Tuesday.

The administration has appealed to the residents of the twin towns and district not to pay heed to rumours. ''We are keeping a close eye on the social media also...any attempt to foment tension will be sternly dealt with,'' the official said.

The Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP) will observe 'shaurya diwas' (bravery day) on the demolition anniversary and hold programmes at its headquarters in Ayodhya. Senior VHP leaders were expected to attend the event, sources said.

Black Day

The Muslim outfits, on the other hand, will observe 'Black Day' on Wednesday.

The district administration has imposed a ban on public meetings and marches and processions on the day.

Barely a few days ago, communal clashes rocked nearby Baharaich district during a procession on the occasion of 'Barawafat' (a Muslim festival).
