Rogue tusker on the run injures 6 in C'durga dist: The lone tusker running amok in Chitradurga and neighbouring districts for the past 12 days, injured six people and killed an ox in a village in Holalkere taluk on Friday.

The elephant, which strayed into a field in Talikatte village, attacked Mudiyappa, Basamma and Suresh. While it stabbed Mudiyappa with its tusk, the jumbo flung Suresh with its trunk. All the three were shifted to hospitals for treatment. It also stabbed an ox in the same village. The animal did not respond to treatment and died in the noon.

The pachyderm later attacked Aneppa and his sons Siddesh and Nagaraj near Madapura. All of them were on their way to a land. They have been shifted to a hospital in Shivamogga.

The residents of the village in the vicinity are gripped by fear of jumbo attack. They did not venture into their land and remained confined to their homes. Eyewitnesses said that the elephant entered Holalkere taluk from Channagiri (Davangere district).

Holalkere tahsildar Y Thippeswamy confirmed that six people have been injured in the elephant attack in the taluk. He said the movement of the jumbo was being tracked.

Meanwhile, a team of 25 experts comprising veterinarians and mahouts has arrived at Sakrebailu elephant camp near Shivamogga to capture the rogue tusker. Five tamed jumbos are also part of this team.

Balachandra, deputy conservator of forests, Bhadravathi division, said that attempts would be made to drive the elephant back into the forest. However, it if continues to go on a rampage, the elephant may to have to be captured, he added.

"The elephant is on the run and we have to wait till it stays at one place. It is dangerous to dart the animal in an area inhabited by human beings. Hence, such operation should be conducted only in the forest area," he explained.
