Sanitation workers protest delay in salaries

Last Updated 26 December 2017, 19:50 IST

Hundreds of sanitation workers protested at the BBMP Mahadevapura office on Tuesday against garbage contractors for not releasing their salaries.

The workers said that they have not got their salaries for three months. They also complained that the garbage contractors are misusing their ATM cards and bank accounts.

"The BBMP office has sent arrears for the workers. But it has been held up. Each worker is supposed to receive Rs 30,000 arrears. This has also been delayed and the wage has also not been paid," said Maithreyi Krishnan, a representative of BBMP Guttige Pourakarmikara Sangha.

"The Palike records show that workers have received arrears. But the money is still with the contractors. They have not paid us," she said.

Vasantha Kumari, deputy commissioner, BBMP, Mahadevapura zone said: "We have listened to their demands. The joint commissioner of the zone is on leave and will be back by December 29 after which these issues will be resolved."
