Modi reaches out to Manmohan with handshake

Last Updated 05 January 2018, 17:51 IST

Weeks after a bitter row, Prime Minister Narendra Modi walked up to former prime minister Manmohan Singh in the Rajya Sabha on Friday, and shook hands with him.

The show of cordiality between the incumbent and the former premier follows a rare row that broke out last month after Modi insinuated that Manmohan Singh colluded with Pakistan in the Gujarat polls. Manmohan hit back, saying a "dangerous precedent" was being set by such accusations, and sought an apology.

On Friday, as soon as chairman M Venkaiah Naidu adjourned the House sine die and 'Vande Mataram' was rendered, Modi was seen moving towards the Opposition benches, shaking hands with some members, including his predecessor.  He reached the seat of Manmohan Singh, shook hands with him and spoke to him.

Modi also shook hands with deputy chairman P J Kurien and veteran Congress leader Karan Singh, who was given a farewell by the Upper House, as his tenure ends on January 27.
