Malpe Fishermen's Deep Sea Trawl Boat Association has decided to stop fishing and protest against the high voltage light centric fishing.

Malpe Fishermen's Deep Sea Trawl Boat Association President Kishore D Suvarna told DH that the association has taken the decision due to the failure of the District In-charge minister Pramod Madhwaraj to implement the ban order against high voltage light centric fishing in the district.

He added that there are nearly 1000 Deep Sea Trawl Boats in Malpe. Today as many as 100 have come to the shore and been anchored. The remaining are returning to the dock. By another 12 days, all the Deep Sea Trawl Boats would return to the shore and the protest would be carried out rigorously.

He added that despite the Government of India banning high voltage light centric fishing, the Karnataka government is not taking any action and the Udupi district in-charge minister should be held responsible. The association had already given time to the minister to take action. However, the minister continued to ignore the demand and the Deep Sea Trawl Boat Association has no other option than going on strike, he said.
