A 24-year-old woman committed suicide at her apartment over alleged harassment by her in-laws in Rajarajeshwari Nagar on Thursday.

The deceased, Nirmala, was a native of Mysuru and was married to Vishwanath nearly a year ago. Vishwanath - who works for a private firm in Japan - was visiting her once a year, the police said. Nirmala was living with her in-laws, Prema and Nagaraj.

According to the police, Vishwanath had come on a vacation and had left only a couple of days ago. On Thursday, Nirmala committed suicide in her room by hanging from a ceiling fan. She had left a suicide note, blaming her in-laws as the reason for her taking the extreme step.

The police also learnt that the in-laws tore the suicide note and threw the pieces in the dustbin before alerting them.

Rajarajeshwari Nagar police rushed to the spot and recovered the torn pieces after a thorough search. Based on the evidence, they took the couple into custody for questioning. The couple have also been booked for tampering with evidence. Further investigations are under way.
