Stage set for GP polls in Balehonnur

Notification is out on Wednesday, and the process of filing nomination papers has also begun.

B Kanabur Gram Panchayat has 27 members in seven blocks. As per the voters’ list, there are more than 7,200 voters. As many as 17 Congress-supported candidates and 5 members each supported by BJP and JD(S) had been elected for the Panchayat during the 2005 elections. However, two JD(S) supported members had joined Congress within a year.

The Congress-supported members who had majority had enjoyed power in the panchayat for three-and-half years. In a surprising development, a JD(S)-supported member became the President in 2008. The B Kanabur Panchayat has seen five presidents in the past five years.

As soon as the election schedule is out, the political activities are gathering momentum. Meetings and group discussions are taking place at different levels and the local leaders are planning their own strategies. Though the elections to local bodies are not taking place based on political parties, everything is purely political here. Each candidate is supported by a specific political party and the parties are trying to have their majority in the panchayats.
In the meantime, Independent candidates too are trying their luck. Those who had already been the Panchayat members are also preparing to file their papers for the second time.
The activities are going on in the same force in the nearby Magundi, Bannur, Aduvalli, Karkeshwara gram panchayats.
