Transport dept moots 10% reduction in bus fares ahead of polls

The Transport department will propose a 10% reduction in bus fares during the pre-budget meeting with Chief Minister Siddaramaiah, said Transport Minister H M Revanna on Saturday.

The proposal comes three months ahead of the elections, even though all four state-owned corporations are running under losses.

Speaking to reporters here, Revanna said that the department, in a bid to popularise public transport, had decided to give a 15% concession to those travelling in groups in Vayu Vajra buses plying on Bengaluru roads.

This, he said, was a New Year gift to bus passengers, especially families travelling together.

The government order issued to this effect states that those passengers travelling in a group of three or more members are eligible for the concession. The BMTC had reduced the fares of Vayu Vajra buses from January 1.
