The All India Muslim Personal Law Board (AIMPLB) is planning to include a provision in its model nikaahnama (marriage contract) that the groom will not resort to divorce by saying talaq three times in one go.

According to the sources, the board will discuss the issue at its meeting in Hyderabad on February 9.

Sources said that the AIMPLB was not in favour of enactment of a law to deal with this "social evil" and wanted to devise a different method to tackle the issue.

"Triple talaq though is sanctioned by the sharia (Islamic law) is a social evil...it should not be resorted to as it breaks the families," said a senior board member here.

He said that the model nikaahnama would include a line to be uttered by the groom at the time of the marriage that he would not give triple talaq in one go.

The board member said that at present there were several model nikaahnama in use in the country and different sects use different nikaahnamas. "Our endeavour is to make one model nikaahnama, which can be used by everyone," he added.

He said that once this proposal was accepted by the members, the board would then take it up with the 'qazis' (the Muslim priests, who solemnise marriages).
