An irate mob torched two buses and another vehicle and pelted stones at the police on the EM Bypass on Saturday after two college students were run over by a speeding bus.

The accident occurred around 11.30 am when two college students - Biswajit Bhuniya and Sanjay Basu - were hit by a bus at Chingrighata area on the Eastern Metropolitan Bypass, Bidhannagar city police commissioner Gyanwant Singh said.

The protesters, who assembled after the accident, torched two buses and a vehicle, blocked the major road for about two-and-half hours and pelted stones at the police, he said.

The police resorted to baton charge to disperse the mob.

"We rushed a huge police contingent to control the situation and we have removed the road blockade. The situation is presently under control," Singh said.

An eyewitness said, "The speeding bus broke the traffic signal and hit the youths from behind. Both of them died on the spot. There were no traffic police when the incident happened," he said.

The driver of the speeding bus has been arrested.

They also demanded that Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee should come and assure them that action would be taken against the guilty policemen.

TMC MLA of the area Sujit Bose rushed to the spot and assured that the guilty would be arrested soon. "We have also spoken to the family members of both the youths who were killed in the accident. The state government will extend all help to the families," Bose said.
