'I hate putting on makeup'

The joy of having two films one has acted in, running in  the theatres at the same time, is something every actor would love to experience. Actor Anupriya Goenka who is revelling in the success of her recent releases 'Padmaavat' and 'Tiger Zinda Hai', confesses that her career is still at a nascent state. In a candid conversation with Tini Sara Anien, she talks about her latest films and more  

Is Rani Nagmati from 'Padmaavat' one of your most celebrated roles?

It is one of my more celebrated roles. The main reason for it is that I got to work with Sanjay sir which was a lifetime experience. The role and he taught me a lot about perseverance.    

Who was most fun on the sets of the film?

Everyone belonged to a league of their own. While I didn't have scenes with Ranveer (Singh), I always heard great stories about him. Deepika (Padukone) is an epitome of elegance. She is a no-nonsense person on the sets and one can have lovely conversations with her. Shahid (Kapoor) is a fun person.  As a co-star, he is very giving and makes room for others to grow.  

Were you  stressed when  'Padmaavat'  was getting delayed?

It was a tough time for the entire team. We had worked on the film for a long while.  Everybody involved with 'Padmaavat' had put their hearts in it. I would always think about what Sanjay sir was going through. We all knew that the movie was a homage to the Rajputs and would make it big.

How exciting is it to have two films in the theatres now?

It's a fantastic feeling. 'Padmaavat' was supposed to release earlier followed by 'Tiger Zinda Hai'. Despite all the chaos, the movies released close to one other. I feel good when people appreciate me for being a part of two big films.        

Are there comparisons between your two roles?

Comparisons are good. It is only when roles are compared that one can understand how closely people  are watching your work. The emotions, the treatment of the two films and even the subjects were different. I play a vulnerable and honest Poorna in 'Tiger Zinda Hai' and a selfish and cunning Rani Nagmati in 'Padmaavat'.  The  only  thing that is similar is the passion the films were made with.  

In your career, which role are you closest to?

From 'Bobby Jasoos' to 'Paathshala', I relate to each of my characters. But I connect most with Poorna.      

Many would remember you for the sensational advertisement you did for Myntra. How challenging was that?

Romancing a girl was a challenge. I had butterflies in my stomach even though I was very sure  about doing the commercial from the beginning.  

Some directors you would like to work with.

My biggest high is that I have worked with varied directors even though I have a long way to go. I would love to work with Vishal Bhardwaj, Imtiaz Ali, Anurag Kashyap, Zoya Akhtar and so many others. The list is endless.  

What is your  upcoming project?

I have 'Maaya' with Nagesh Kukunoor coming up. The movie is about a simple, docile and god-fearing girl who wants to become an actor. It has a very bold subject and is a dark film. I always  revered Nagesh sir and projects like 'Hyderabad Blues', 'Iqbal'. The film is a dream come true.

Are you a no-makeup person?

It's been a while since I have stepped out without makeup. I confess one thing, I hate putting on makeup. Thankfully our films now appreciate the natural radiance of a woman, thus good or little makeup is done.
