Q: I am getting married in a couple of months. I don't want to be a traditional bride. I'm 28 and 5 ft 6. I'm slightly on the heavier side. I love checkered sarees. How can I incorporate that print and create an elegant yet modern look? - Naina

Checkered trends are both inspiring and interesting with patterns that really flatter the figure and control the gaze of the eye. Combine sarees with shrugs, jackets, sleeveless overcoats with belts that accentuate your waistline. Wearing prints and patterns is supposed to be a fun part of getting dressed, so incorporate these in your saree.

Q: My best friend is getting married soon. I love Kanjeevaram sarees, but I am a little uncomfortable because of my height. I'm 25 and I have an hourglass figure. I want to pair traditional pants with a contemporary top. Can you also suggest accessories for the outfit. - Mallika

Brocades! Brocades! Rich in zari and pattern. A brocade slim-fit pant with a sheer dressy top, complemented with traditional gold Mughal jewellery is the look that's going to rock weddings this season.

Q: I am 5 ft 8 and slim. I have trouble finding clothes that match my height and weight. Either they are too long or too short (especially maxi dresses and skirts). What should I do? Buying bigger-sized clothes and getting them altered is cumbersome. - Geetika Dev

Never let anyone or anything put your style in a box. When you give your style parameters, you set boundaries for yourself too. To give your body balance, team an oversized garment with a belt to your natural waist. Tall women look especially great in jumpsuits. To create balance, you might want to try one that has a lower neckline, to provide a counterweight to your long legs. To make pants that are too short seem intentional, make a small cuff and add a strappy heel. Average height of an Indian girl is 5 ft 5 so, try international online brands like ASOS, Gap, The Limited, and Alloy or have clothes custom made.

Q: I am 21 years old and I will be embarking on my professional journey soon. I am looking to update my wardrobe so that I don't look like someone who is just out college. What are some of the wardrobe essentials? - Jamuna

Every professional woman must have a power suit. No professional wardrobe is complete without one or two reliable blazers that you can pair with everything from cropped straight-leg pants to your favourite pencil skirt to a no-fuss sheath dress. Heels also play a major role in professional attire, but comfy shoes are equally important. To round out your professional wardrobe, a statement handbag and some jewellery is a must.
