Pourakarmikas (municipal workers) will now get their midday meal at Indira canteens.
Around 18,000 pourakarmikas, about 2,000 drivers of garbage vehicles and helpers will get to eat at Indira canteens for free, said Sarfaraz Khan, Joint Commissioner (Health/ SWM), BBMP. Until now, the food was being provided by Iskcon.
The matter came up for discussion at a meeting of the BBMP Council on Monday.
The BBMP is also considering adding variety to the menu by introducing 'ragi mudde' and sweets, Palike commissioner N Manjunath Prasad said.
The BBMP Council meeting saw a verbal duel between members of the ruling party and the Opposition over the distribution of land to SCs/STs outside BBMP limits. The state government had ordered the civic body to allot homes to SCs/STs outside BBMP limits. Since the BBMP does not own the land outside its jurisdiction, Mayor R Sampath Raj said he would send the request back to the government.
