Day 2 of KSPCB hearing: 45 Bellandur apartments want STP exemption

For the second straight day, owners of  apartments situated around Bellandur Lake made representations to the  Karnataka State Pollution Control Board (KSPCB) on why they should be exempted from installing their sewage treatment plants (STPs).

The KSPCB heard out the representatives of  around 45 apartments on Thursday. It had issued notices to 99 apartments for letting sewage into  the lake on the orders of the National  Green Tribunal (NGT).

While some  said the BWSSB had sanctioned them sanitary connections to let sewage into the lake,  smaller apartments  wanted the KSPCB to exempt them from installing the sewage treatment plants.  A few apartment owners are left in the lurch because all the documents are with the builder.

Rajashekhar Reddy, of Prakash Pride Apartment near Kadubeesanahalli, said they were discharging wastewater into an STP pit with  due permission from the gram panchayat. "The No Objection Certificate (NOC) was also obtained from the BWSSB for letting wastewater into the sewer lines. The stipulated fees and  development charges have been paid. Presently, wastewater is being let into the pit because the  lines have not yet been drawn," he said.

Balagopal, president, Prabhavathi Meghana Towers in Hongasandra, Bommanahalli, said they had applied for a sewer connection, but pipelines were yet to be laid. The builder had deposited Rs 3.84 lakh with the BWSSB.

K Gurumurthy, of Amrutha Mansion Apartment in Teachers Colony near Central Silk Board, said their building  was smaller than the dimension set by the  BWSSB and the KSPCB for installing the STP. "We submitted the necessary documents to the  KSPCB in September 2017, but it still served us a notice," he said.

In 2016, the government exempted apartments smaller than  2,000 square metres or with less than  20 units from  installing STPs if  sewer lines existed.
