Said to be depressed after his wife divorced him, a  54-year-old former serviceman shot himself dead in East Bengaluru  on Sunday, the Hennur police said.

Anil Ahuja, a native of Uttar Pradesh, had moved to Bengaluru three years ago after taking voluntary retirement. He lived with his wife and children at an apartment in Papaiah Layout, Horamavu, and ran an  automobile business.

Trouble began when his wife divorced him five months ago and he suffered losses in  business. He was unable to repay loans taken from friends and relatives. He opened up to a relative on Sunday.

Around 9.30 pm on Sunday,  he shot himself in the head with a  licensed revolver. Hearing the gunshot, neighbours rushed to his flat only to find him dead. They called the police.

According to police, it was not the first time that Ahuja had tried to end his life. Just six months ago, he had  attempted suicide three to four times but his children restrained him.

Police have registered a case and sent the body for post-mortem.
