After the rollout of e-way system bill on the intervening midnight of Saturday and Sunday, as many as 1,71,503 electronic bills for transporters have been "successfully" generated on the portal, the finance ministry said on Sunday, calling the much-awaited pan-India rollout a smooth one.

"A total of 10,96,905 taxpayers have registered on the e-way bill portal till date. Further, 19,796 transporters, who are not registered under GST, have enrolled themselves on the e-way bill portal. 1,71,503 e-way bills have been successfully generated on the portal from 00:00 hours till 17:00 hrs (12 midnight to 5 pm) of April 1, 2018," the ministry said in a statement.

E-way bill is generated where the value of the consignment transported exceeds Rs 50,000.

It became mandatory from Sunday for inter-state movement of goods. The implementation of the nationwide e-way bill mechanism under the GST regime is being done by GST Network in association with the National Informatics Centre and is being run on the  portal 'https://ewaybillgst.gov.in'.

To answer queries from taxpayers and transporters, a central help desk of the GST has made special arrangements, with 100 agents exclusively dedicated to answering queries related to e-way bills, the ministry said.

So far, Karnataka is the only state to launch an e-way bill for intra-state movement of goods.

It implemented the system in September last year.
