App-based cab services at MIA soon

Mangaluru International Airport Director V V Rao said that an App-based cab service will be started soon at the airport.

Speaking to reporters to announce the airport being adjudged as the cleanest airport in India in a survey conducted as part of the 'Swachh Bharath Abhiyan' on Tuesday, he said the AAI will call tenders to provide app-based taxi services to its passengers, wherein the taxi operators will be charged space rentals. In the first phase, five airports including Chennai has been provided with the App-based cab services.

The award of being the most clean airport has been motivational. "The survey was conducted in February. The second place was won by Thiruvananthapuram while the third place was won by Guwahati airport."

The Mangaluru airport has outsourced the cleanliness contract to Durga Facility Management Services Private Limited.

The Airport Director said that the airport has handled 23.5 lakh passengers during 2017-18 when compared to 17.5 lakh passengers during the previous year. The airport is likely to handle 3 million passengers during 2018-19, he said. Domestic cargo handled from April 2016 to March 2017 was 3,271 metric tonnes, while from April 2017 to March 2018, the domestic cargo was 3,297.92 metric tonnes and international cargo was 2,159.53 metric tonnes. The terminal building will be extended by including a new arrival hall being built at a cost of Rs 132 crore. The work is expected to start shortly.

Further, he said that the local art works will greet the passengers at the arrival hall. The AC ducts have been infused with a fragrance of jasmine.
