April 14 last date to enroll in voters' list, says DC

Deputy Commissioner M K Srirangaiah said that all Indian citizens who have completed 18 years as on January 1, 2018, may enroll in the voters' list before April 14, ahead of state assembly elections.

Briefing reporters on Wednesday, he said that the booth-level campaign will be organised on April 8, to enroll the names of eligible voters. Booth-level officers will receive the applications in this connection.

If names are omitted from the voters' list, the same may be added. There is also a provision to delete the names of deceased voters.

The DC further said that as per the model code of conduct, 3,094 posters and banners and 875 wall paintings have been removed in the district. 22 checkposts have been opened and 29 rapid action teams have been formed in the district.

239.325 litres of illicit liquor worth Rs 1.06 lakh has been seized and 32 cases have been registered in this regard.

A complaint has been registered against using a vehicle for campaigning without obtaining prior permission. Rs 1.30 lakh cash transported without proper records, has been confiscated, along with registering a case. If the amount of seized money exceeds Rs 10 lakh, it is handed over to the Income Tax Department.

A control room which operates round the clock, has been opened in the DC's office towards the effective implementation of the model code of conduct. Public may submit the complaints by calling the toll-free number 1800 4250 122.

Party symbols pasted on the vehicles of political leaders will be removed. However, the same can be used with prior permission from the election officer. The authenticity of the identity cards provided by private persons will also be checked.

Directions have been issued to the tahsildars of the respective taluks to apply protective sheets on the roof of checkposts, following rains in the Malnad region.

Responding to a query, the DC, who is also the district election officer, said that no political party could supply water to villages.

The naxal-infested areas in the district have 34 poll booths. Above 75% of voting was recorded during 2013 assembly elections in the naxal infested areas. Paramilitary force will be deployed, along with police personnel, in these places.
