The three policemen of the Andhra Pradesh Special Police were evidently unarmed. While one constable managed to escape, the other two were not so lucky. Constable U Ramesh died on the spot, while Raju is recovering in Osmania Hospital. Following the incident, Hyderabad has been put on a high alert.

The incident has sent shock waves as it came despite the continuing search operations by the police for over a fortnight amid intelligence warnings of possible terror attacks and following the arrest of a terror suspect.

The police ruled out that the attack was a handiwork of terrorists. On the other hand, they believed that it was likely in retaliation to the 2007 bomb blast in Mecca Masjid, whose third anniversary is on May 18.

The assailants opened two rounds of fire on the unarmed policemen near Volga Cafe in Shahalibanda and made good their escape. The police have found a CD near the spot which had speeches of leaders of an extremist organisation.
