Ulsoor SU claw back to bag title

Basketball: State Youth Championships: Sports School, Vidyanagar down Beagles to retain girls crown

With three wins out of three matches, Ulsoor bagged the title for the first time with a 54-48 win over VNS Sports School, while Sports School retained the title they had won last year after scoring a 39-28 win against Beagles.

Taking on VNS Sports School greenhorns Ulsoor did not look the threat they were considered to be until the dying seconds of the match. VNS took a 10-9 lead at the end of the first quarter and added 19 points in the second quarter to extend their lead to 29-14 at half-time.

Ulsoor got a grip of things after the break when they managed to outscore VNS (13-7) to close the deficit. Then, an amazing display of three-point shooting from shooting guard Hari Shankar saw Ulsoor sink 27 points in the final quarter for the title.

Hari Shankar (16), Sudeendra (13) and Farhan (10) scored for Ulsoor while Prithvi Chengappa (24) and Nikhilesh (17) did their bit for VNS.

Results: Boys: Ulsoor Sports Union: 54 (Hari Shankar 16, Sudeendra 13, Farhan 11) bt VNS Sports Club: 48 (Prithivi Chengappa 24, Nikhilesh 17). HT: 14-29; VBC, Mandya: 48 (Shamanth 20, Nikhil 12) bt Mangalore BC: 45 (Arun Mallya 19, Nihal Kumar 16). HT: 14-13
Girls: Sports School, Vidyanagar: 39 (Praneetha 19, Manjula 9, Lavayna 9) bt Beagles: 28 ( Sushma 18, Ujjawal 4, Prathiksha 4). HT: 23-11; Mounts Club: 49 (Karishma R 18, Kripa 10) bt JSC: 45 (Rakshitha 27, Sindhuri 6). HT: 19-17.

Standings: Boys: Ulsoor Sports Union 1; VNS Sports Club 2; Vivekananda, Mandya 3;  Mangalore BC 4.

Girls: Sports School, Vidyanagar 1; Mounts Club 2; Beagles 3; JSC 4.
