The award consisting of Rs 40,000 is given annually to those persons or organisations who have done laudable work in the field of hand-weaving.

The Charkha Society provides market for clothes that the weavers produce under the brand name Desi.

State DGP Ajai Kumar Singh, film director M S Sathyu and former vice-chairperson of the All India Handloom Board Ujiramma were the guests of honour.

Speaking on the occasion, Manager of Desi Trust Prasanna said that the idea behind presenting the awards is to promote the traditional methods of hand-weaving using Charkha that Gandhiji endorsed and to stand as a source of inspiration to the others.
Posters depicting traditional hand-weaving methods and the history of hand-weaving in India were released on this occasion by M S Sathyu.

Anand Dharwad from Sathanur, H N Ramakrishnaiah from Khadi Gramodyog Sahakarara Sangha,  Holenarsipur and B K Vishwanath from Sri Adishakti hand- weavers self-help group, Gajendragad were the awardees.
