Trooper held for 'raping' minor

Nazir Ahmed, a constable of an Indian Reserve Police (IRP) battalion, is accused of raping a 14-year-old girl in the Poshpora village near Tangmarg, 45 km from here.

Ahmed was a personal security guard of legislator Ghulam Hassan Mir at Tangmarg but was transferred two days ago.  He was taken into custody after protests at Tangmarg, a police officer said. “We have arrested the accused and an FIR has been lodged by police,” the officer said. The grandmother of the victim died on Monday morning apparently due to the shock triggering protests in the tourist spot of Tangmarg. The incident comes close on the heels of the rape and murder of two women in  Shopian, which has triggered wide protest for the past one week.
