UP jailbirds clear intermediate exams

Pathak, accused in a murder case, and some other inmates of the Gorakhpur jail burst in joy after he was declared successful in the intermediate (12th) examination conducted by the state board, the results of which were declared on Thursday.

Pathak had appeared for the examination from the Gorakhpur jail centre of the board. He has secured second division, jail officials said. Rahul Upadhyaya, another inmate from Basti jail, has also cleared the examination. Incidentally, the two had been sent to the Gorakhpur jail to enable them to appear in the examination. As many as seven inmates of the Gorakhpur jail had appeared in the intermediate examinations and all of them have  passed. Arun Kumar Mishra and Manjeet Yadav, other two inmates have secured first division, the officials said. Similarly, Chotkannu and Vishnu Deo have secured second division. Ram Sahay, an inmate of Gonda jail, had appeared from the science stream and has cleared the examination. The UP board had made seven jails in the state its centre for the intermediate examinations this year, according to the board sources.

In all, 74 inmates had appeared in this year’s examinations of whom as many as 65 have been passed. According to jail officials, steps were taken to provide the examinees with all the facilities for undertaking their studies.
