Train attack: 95 bodies identified

"All the bodies identified so far have been handed over to their relatives after post mortem in Midnapore Medical College Hospital and Kharagpur State General Hospital, while samples of the rest sent for DNA testing to identify them," he said.

After a high-level meeting attended among others by Chief Secretary Ardhendu Sen, Home Secretary Samar Ghosh, IGP (Law and Order) S Kar Purakayastha and District Magistrate N S Nigam, Dasgupta said the state government had already released Rs three crore for payment of compensation to the next of kin of the victims at the rate of Rs three lakh each.

Altogether 150 passengers were injured and were being treated in various hospitals in Midnapore, Kharagpur and Kolkata, he said.

Of the injured, 24 serious patients had been sent to Kolkata for better treatment. Of them, one passenger succumbed to injury and four others released after treatment, Dasgupta said.

13 coaches of the Kurla-bound express derailed and five of them were crushed by a goods train coming from the opposite direction in the mishap in West Midnapore district on May 28 which claimed 148 lives.
