Children's library opened for public without inauguration

Last Updated 13 June 2009, 17:18 IST

Infact, Chief Librarian Vishwanath, during the visit of Director of the Department of Libraries S B Hondakeri to Kolar on May 27, had informed that the Children’s Library would be soon inaugurated in the City.

But without organising any inaugural programme or fanfare, the library was opened from June 11 onwards.

The Children’s Library building was constructed in the premises of the District Central Library in the City, at a cost of Rs 10 lakh, in the year 2008-2009. An amount of Rs 2 lakh worth books were also purchased for the library.

The chief librarian had also informed that there was a need to purchase play items for the children, which would be installed in its premises.

However, at present, apart from the books, there are no play items there.

Lack of users

Though all the books are neatly organised in the cupboards and there are sufficient number of chairs and desks in the library, it is very unfortunate to note that there are no good number users to utilise them. The children are yet to throng the library.

Apart from a small press release, there has been absolutely no publicity regarding the Children’s Library. Thus, when the library thrown open on Thursday, it was virtually empty. Even on Friday, the library wore a deserted look.

Only those readers who regularly visited the District Central Library, happened to visit the Children’s Library also.

At present, already four posts are vacant in the District Central Library, including the librarian, assistant librarian, first grade assistant and assistant, which needs to be recruited.

And amidst this, the Children’s Library has also been opened in its premises. Thus, the staff crunch burden on the Library department would be all the more.
