'Water contamination forcing migration'

Reason: Sewerage water from Bangalore has been flowing into the town and contaminating the ground water.

Congress’ D K Shivakumar, who raised the issue in the Legislative Assembly said, more than 40,000 families have migrated to Bangalore and other cities due to water contamination. Water from all 77 borewells in the town has become unfit for drinking. Besides, sewerage water has damaged vast extent of farm land in and around the town, he pointed out.

He also urged the Government to take steps to take up a project to provide Cauvery drinking water and that people there are ready to bear the entire cost of the project.
Urban Development Minister Suresh Kumar said the BWSSB has agreed to give 6.81 million litre per day of water to Kanakapura from its share of the Cauvery water, and Karnataka Urban Water Supply and Sewerage Board will shortly take up a project.
