Sen and sensibility

Riya Sen has come a long way after her debut as a child artist Vishkanya in 1991. Her role as Bhama, who is lured by Digambaran in Santhosh Sivan's Ananthabhadram, is by far the best character she has played thus far, “It’s always a pleasure to work with someone as creative and inspiring as Santosh. I share a certain comfort level with him,” Riya told Metrolife.

After Ananthabhadram, one hasn’t really seen Riya do too many South Indian films. Why? She reasons the best roles from down South are yet to come her way. “If something good and substantial pops up, then I wouldn’t mind considering it,” she says. She has signed up with Rituparno Ghosh for a couple of projects. In Ghosh’s Abohomaan in Bengali, which is a story based on the life of Satyajit Ray, Riya plays an ordinary middle class girl.

Riya has appeared in several item numbers and cameos and was even criticised for appearing semi-nude in a couple of films and on magazine covers as well. But this young lady who never seems to age, has no qualms about flaunting what she has. “It’s not about what you wear but who you are and how you carry it off,” she reasons.

Riya has had her share of link-ups as well. Riya is a voracious reader and has a fetish for Bengali literature particularly works of Rabindranath Tagore. To Riya, Tagore is an icon who knows no parallel. Riya started off on the ramp, she dabbled with films and has appeared in numerous music videos including Falguni Pathak's Yaad Piya Ki Aane Lagi, Asha Bhosle's Jhumka Gira Re, Jagjit Singh and Bhosle's Jab Samne Tum and Kahin Kahin Se.

In another yet-to-be titled Hindi film, Riya will essay the role of a girl from Himachal, “My character is really loud. She’s an extrovert who’s excited and exploits every opportunity to the fullest,” she says.

Apart from adhering to an uncompromising workout schedule, Riya says she prefers spending her spare time with family. “I miss out the quiet moments with my family and friends when I am shooting, so I make it a point to find time for them,” she says.
