Govt plans State-level 'environment award' for students: Palemar

Speaking after planting saplings at Vanamahotsava organised by Asare Charitable Trust at Parapade Government School premises here on Sunday, he said the programme will be chalked out by the department of environment to develop concern towards environment and allow the students to preserve the plants he had planted.

Eco Clubs have been started in every school and the government is providing a grant of Rs 5,000 to each eco club, he informed.  Palemar said 20 lakh saplings will be planted in Dakshina Kannada during the year. The Forest department and MCC had planned to plant 20,000 saplings in City limits. The public should join hands with the authorities to plant saplings in private land,” he appealed.  

There are 4,800 species of plants in Western Ghat. Of which, 800 are on the verge of extinct. “It is our duty to protect the bio diversity in Western Ghats,” he said.

DCF Vijaykumar Shetty, MP Nalin Kumar Kateel, Kodialguthu Charitable Trust President Ajith Kumar Rai Maladi and others were present.

Saplings were distributed to the students on the occasion.
