According to the “Daily Express”, Henry Kerr, who is just three years shy of his 100th birthday, and his bride Valerie Berkowitz, are now Britain’s oldest newlyweds, with a combined age of 184.

In fact, they fell in love when Valerie joined Henry’s poetry reading circle. The couple discovered they had mutual friends from their time living in South Africa. Valerie had been a teacher in Johannesburg, while Henry had managed 200 cinemas across the country.
They tied the knot in a Jewish ceremony at the Sunridge Court residential home where they live, in Golders Green, north London.

Henry had proposed to Valerie over a cup of tea. But she took her time making up her mind, he revealed. He was quoted as saying: “She was bewildered and overcome and said she would have to think about it. It became quite a joke. I kept asking her and eventually she said yes.”

Both have been married before — Valerie for more than 70 years and Henry for over 60 years. And both have children who live in America.

Valerie said: “These were both long and happy marriages to look back on and it’s hard to replace that happy memory.”
