Last Updated 09 August 2010, 16:02 IST

The 'mosquito terminator' train launched in collaboration with the Municipal Corporation of Delhi will run twice in a fortnight till November covering the city from New Delhi to Shahdara and from Anand Vihar to Nizamuddin.

According to a Northern Railway official, an engine will haul a truck mounted power sprayer stationed on a special kind of low flat surface rail wagon.

"This special train by spraying the larvicides would sanitise water bodies upto a distance of 50-60 metres along the tracks," said the official.

Civic bodies are concerned over increasing dengue cases in the city which will host the Commonwealth Games in just two months. The MCD has already fined a number of people and organisations over breeding of mosquitoes in their premises.

The service will run along the railway tracks of New Delhi to Hazrat Nizamuddin stations via Delhi Shahdara and Anand Vihar terminal and then towards ring railway stations of Lajpat Nagar, Delhi Safdarjung and Patel Nagar.

It will also run via New Delhi to Rathdhana (near Narela) via Adarsh Nagar and Badli and return to New Delhi via Ashok Nagar and Lawrance Road, the official said.
