A visual treat at Vidyagiri

Over 8,000 students take part in I-day celebrations

Over 8,000 students from Alva’s college had gathered in the college campus to celebrate the 64th Independence Day, exhibiting the students’ unity and strength and thereby paying a mass tribute to our nation. The students from all the courses including PUC, Degree, engineering and medical had gathered there, standing in apposite lines to salute the country as the national flag was hoisted by the chief guest. Not to leave behind the children from Alva’s special school who too waved the flags with full spirit as and when the integration song was sung. It was indeed a visual treat to the viewers. Speaking on the occasion, English Department Reader from Mangalore Univeristy Dr Ravishankar Rao who was the chief guest of the event called out the students to fight for the freedom from hunger, corruption, caste and sexual oppression. He in his speech asked the crowd to come out of the cynicism of having disparity and disbelief. “Cynicism is eating the core of our country. People are either over patriotic or under patriotic, both of which are troublesome to the society. First and the foremost one must develop in him the capacity to live in this country,” he opined.

Articulating about building our nation, he said that it is possible to build India if we strongly belong to this nation. Belongingness is assured only if we long to belong. “Let us all have the dream to take forward this great country. What it requires to raise India as a strong nation is to acquire independence and interdependence. In spite of all the negative feelings prevailing in our mind, the aspiration for the betterment is always present and I can assure it to myself by looking at this united huge crowd,” he marked.The Independence Day programme was followed by the inauguration of three hostels.

Mijar Guttu Ananda Alva inaugurated the hostels Sharada Education Trust President Prof M B Puranik, Alva’s Education Foundation Chairman Dr M Mohan Alva were present on the occasion.
