Chamarajpet police inspector Ratnakar fired two rounds on rowdy sheeter Soma alias Medda Soma who in his mid-twenties. Sources said Soma received injury on his legs and is shifted to Victoria hospital. The inspector was forced to take out his revolver after Soma tried to attack him.

In the melee, the police inspector Ratnakar and Mahesh were also injured. Around 9.20 pm, police constables Mahesh and Venkata Hanumaiah spotted Soma near Ashwathkatte Road in Chamarajpet while he was threatening some youth for money. When the cops tried to intervene and apprehend him, he pushed them aside and escaped.

The constables alerted the control room over walkie-talkie following which the inspector along with his team rushed to the spot. Soma quite often visits Chamarajpet as his sister lives in the same area.

Soma escaped into the neighbouring Byatarayanpura police station limits and took shelter behind a huge peepul tree next to Muthumaramma temple near Sanjaynagar slum.

Inspector Ratnakar spotted Soma and ordered him to surrender. Soma vented out his anger when the inspector gave stern warnings. Ratnakar is said to have compelled to pull the trigger when Soma attacked him with a razor. Soma collapsed after one of the bullets went straight into his thigh.

Recently, the Chamrajpet police had arrested Soma, on charges of robbery and sent him to jail.

But after coming out of jail, he continued his misdeeds. He was terrorising the residents in the area, said the police. Cases of murder, attempt-to-murder and robbery have been booked in Hanumanthnagar, Chamrajpet and Byatarayanapura police stations.
