In fact, district administration had sent a proposal to the department to create new Town Municipal Councils and seven new Town Panchayats in the district. The proposal also demands the expansion of Udupi City Municipal Corporation by bringing around eight villages under its jurisdiction.

The proposal had also recommended that Brahmavar can be made a TMC by merging the gram panchayats of Varambally, Harady, Chantar and Handady, which will have a total population of 27,680. The second TMC could be formed by including Hejmady, Bada, Yellur, Belapu, Palimar, Padubidri and Tenka Gram Panchayats. After merger, the population of this TMC would be 45,363.

Speaking to Deccan Herald, Deputy Commissioner Hemalatha said that the ministry is yet to take a decision on the proposal.

It was proposed to expand Udupi CMC by including Ambalpadi, Udyavar, Alevoor, Kadekar, Thonse, Thenkaneediyur, Badneediyur and 80-Badagabettu gram pachayats. The eight Panchayats are currently under Udupi Urban Development Authority. UDA is regulating all the development process in these areas. Planned development is under progress in all the eight Gram Panchayats.

Udyavar, Ambalpadi, Thonse and other areas are within 5 metres radius from the city limits. The total population of these Gram Panchayats is approximately 72,298. The Udupi TMC was upgraded to CMC in the year 1995 by extending the limit of CMC to 68.23 kms area as against 9.6 kms area.

CMC Commissioner Gokuldas Nayak said the proposal has been sent to the government and it is solely dependent on government to take an early decision. However, we can expect the order only after 2011 census, he added.
