The musicians of the Bangalore School of Music presented classical guitar recital of pieces by maestros Bach and Telemann at an event called Airs on the Guitar Strings at Alliance Francaise recently.

The audience comprised a group of people who had come together for the love for classical music. The evening was abuzz with excitement and the audience eagerly waited for the event to begin. “I grew up listening to classical music. And with music of great artistes being played today, I am really looking forward to tonight,” said Aparajita, a music enthusiast.

The concert featured classical guitarists Dinesh, Karnajit, Len  and Andy, among others, who started out with the ‘Airs’ from Bach and Mozart. The music was soothing and the guitarists treated the audience to one of the most intricate and beautiful musical pieces created. The recital of Russian musician Nikita Koshkin’s Usher-Waltz was an enthralling performance.

The piece was inspired by the Edgar Allan Poe story The Fall of the House of Usher. From the harmonic progression in the beginning to the extraordinary effect of the climax, the music was magical and was immensely enjoyed by the audience. The recital featured a combination of solos, duets, trios and quartet. What came next was music by composers Barrios and Villa which was highly enjoyable and had an immediate appeal. What couldn’t be ignored was the expertise of the performers considering that the piece selected by them was very complicated. Other pieces played during the evening were the Spanish Airs by Fernando Sor and Torroba. The Telemann Concerto in D Major was the final performance for the evening.

Powerful and moving, the performers were able to bring out the beauty of the classical pieces. And what was astonishing was the deep emotional impact of the music and the range of sound that came from the guitar. Aarushi, who was attending a concert, for the first time said, “The music was so amazing that I did not even realise when the evening came to an end.”
