Man arrested for 'raping' daughter

The girl had been abused sexually for 5 months now

On the eve of International Father’s Day on Saturday, a man was arrested for molesting and raping his daughter. 

The Parappana Agrahara police have identified the suspect as Mahadevaiah Shetty, 44, a resident of Govindashettypalya in Electronics City.

Police said that Shetty had been molesting his 18-year-old daughter, a garment factory worker, for the last five months. He had even raped her thrice during the last three months. The victim silently suffered the trauma as her father threatened to kill her if she revealed the matter to anyone.

The police have booked him under IPC Sections 376 (rape), 506 (criminal intimidation) and 323 (voluntarily causing hurt).

Police said that on Saturday, Shetty’s behaviour with his daughter had been objectional after she returned home from work.

Shetty, who was heavily drunk, tried to drag and hug her in front of his wife and son. Unable to bear this, the girl ran away from the house. But he chased her down near a bus shelter. He tried to molest her in full public view, police said.

However, she was rescued by local residents who beat Shetty black and blue and by members of women’s organisations. He was later handed over to the police. In a complaint to the police she filed at 11 pm on Saturday, the girl narrated to them her five-month ordeal.

The victim’s mother and brother were stunned and did not know how to react after she told them about how her father subjected her to repeated sexual abuse.


 Shetty, along with his family, had moved to Bangalore one-and-half-years ago. He was employed in the housekeeping department of a private factory, while his wife, daughter and son were employed in separate factories, police said.

Shetty and his daughter were sent for medical examination to the Victoria Hospital on Sunday. The medical examination reports proved the sexual abuse.

When contacted, DCP (South East Division) T D Pawar said the police had recorded the victim’s statement. “She is under medical care and her condition is stable. She might be provided counselling as she is under shock, Pawar said.
