A jeweller was also arrested in this case for allegedly buying the stolen jewellery, Additional Commissioner of Police (Crime) Neeraj Thakur said.

Diamonds worth Rs two lakh, an SUV and stolen articles were recovered from the arrested persons, he said.

The arrested have been identified as Rakesh (26), Joginder Singh (22) and Kitab Singh, who is a goldsmith and jeweller, the officer said.

"Rakesh and Joginder were involved in stealing jewellery from the luggage of train passengers. They were found involved in theft of 11 diamond necklaces worth Rs 60 lakh and other articles of a passenger on August 21," Thakur said.

They were arrested on September 12 from Mongolpuri Industrial Area following a tip-off.
The duo had sold the stolen jewellery to Kitab Singh, his son Rajkumar and Mahender, all residents of Haryana's Bhiwani.

"The gang operates in AC compartments of trains running between Mumbai and Delhi. After carefully selecting the day and the train, these thieves would board the train at specific points which included Tuglakabad and Okhla railway stations," Thakur said.

At stations like Palwal, Mathura and Nizamuddin, trains have very brief halts of 2-3 minutes.
"Long distance travelllers generally carry large amount of luggage. Passengers usually move their luggage nearer to the door. The space near the doors becomes crammed with suitcases and no one can move forward or backward. This is the time the gang would strike," Thakur said.
