Hostel inmates stage stir against substandard food

The hostelites who gathered with bowls in their hands on Tuesday alleged that the Social Welfare Department is neglecting the dalit students. It may be recalled the inmates of the same hostel had staged stir several times on the same issue earlier.

The students alleged unhygienic condition at the hostel premises. They complained that the students were not provided hot water for bathing, and the food provided are most of the times is unfit for consumption.

The food is substandard and rice is half baked which causes discomfort and other health problems. The matter has been brought to the notice of the officials and protests have been staged several times. But the department officials have not bothered to inspect the hostel once.

More than 50 students took out a protest march holding bowls in their hands and culminated at the Deputy Commissioner’s office. Some dalit organisations and leaders extended support to their protest.

Social Welfare Department official arrived at the spot but was helpless. Verifying the complaints of the students, he said he had taken charge only three days ago, and promised to visit the hostel besides taking necessary steps.
