Delivering the keynote address after inaugurating the Committee, Clipton D Rosario from Alternative Law Forum, Bangalore, said that many changes which have taken place in the society are posing a severe threat to human rights as a whole.

“The factors like globalisation, caste system, communal hatredness and patriarchal system in India have been great hindrances in practicing human rights. Globalisation is having its worst impact on the society. One cannot propagate human rights unless he understands the impact of globalisation on layman,” he added.

He said that mega industrial projects like SEZ and PCPIR, Airports and Highway projects have snatched away lakhs of acres of land from farmers. “Farmers are at least compensated after the land acquisition, but the actual sufferers here are the Dalits who work in the agriculture fields. They are left bewildered and unattended. Communalism poses a severe threat on all government activities. Communal powers are the harbingers of hatredness.” Quoting Gujarat riots, he said that communal powers use Dalits and Adivasis community people as foot soldiers to spread communalism and force them to indulge them in violent activities. He regretted that the real culprits responsible for the riot are being secured from the law and the men who were used by the culprits as weapons are undergoing the sentence.
