Dai Greene disappointed by withdrawals of athletes

Several top cyclists, including Greene's compatriot Olympic champion Geraint Thomas, star tennis players and other athletes have withdrawn from the Games due to various reasons ranging from security to health fears.

However, the Welsh 400m hurdler said he is committed to participate in the Games. "I think a lot of people would definitely have gone out there if it was the Olympic Games.

It's disappointing that some of them don't stand it in as high a regard," Greene said.
The unhealthy conditions at the Games village drew sharp criticism from the visiting delegates and it led to may more pull outs.

Team Wales has already confirmed its participation in the October 3-14 event in New Delhi.

Greene said the Welsh team is happy with the accommodation being provided to them.

"I've been in close contact with the guys at Team Wales, I know they've been over there for the past couple of weeks sorting things out. They've been well ahead of schedule and they've found the problems very early.

"In terms of accommodation for Team Wales it's slightly different to where Team England and Team Scotland are staying and we've had the thumbs up and everything's OK," Greene told BBC Radio 5 live.

Greene also said that players who have pulled out should not be criticised. "I don't think any athlete would be looked at badly if they were to withdraw from the competition... but as far as I'm concerned I've had loads of reassurances from Team Wales and everything in our camp looks very good," he said.

The champion hurdler also said that he has an unfinished task to do at this edition of the Games since he could not participate in the 4X400m in previous edition.

"Four years ago in Melbourne I didn't get to run, I was told the day of the heats of the 4x400m that we were going to pull out. So I've definitely got some unfinished business and to do it in a Welsh vest means that little bit more really.

"When I get out there all I want to do is perform to the best of my ability. If I perform to the best of my ability then I know I can come away with the gold," he said.
