Maharashtra Assembly Election 2024 | Maha Yuti govt swearing-in on Dec 5 with PM Modi in attendance

Mumbai: The grand swearing-in ceremony of the new Maha Yuti-NDA government in Maharashtra will be held on December 5 even as backroom negotiations continued between BJP and its allies--Eknath Shinde-led Shiv Sena and Ajit Pawar-led NCP--over the weekend on the power-sharing formula, distribution of portfolios and most importantly the chief minister's post.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi will be present at the function to be held at the historic Azad Maidan.

"The oath-taking ceremony of the Maha Yuti government will take place on December 5, 2024 (Thursday) at 1700 hrs at Azad Maidan," state BJP President Chandrashekar Bawankule said.

"The wait has ended...I congratulate the people of Maharashtra" he said.

BJP’s Devendra Fadnavis has emerged as the frontrunner for the post of Maharashtra Chief Minister though there are a few other contenders.

While Shinde, the caretaker CM is in his village in Dare near the hill station of Mahabaleshwar in Satara district, Fadnavis and Pawar were in Pune for different engagements.

Shinde is not keeping well and is recuperating at his village home.

The total number of ministers that Maharashtra can have is 43.

While the BJP is expected to get 21 berths, the Shiv Sena and NCP may get 12 and 10, respectively.

The government is likely to have a BJP CM with two Deputy CMs from Shiv Sena and NCP.

As far as the portfolios are concerned, the three partners are fighting for crucial portfolios like Revenue, Home, Urban Development, Rural Development, Water Resources, Energy, Public Works.

"It has been decided that the CM would be from the BJP and there would be two Deputy CMs from Shiv Sena and NCP," said Pawar.

It has been a week since the results of the 288-member Maharashtra Legislative Assembly polls were out, however, the BJP is yet to convene the Legislature Party (LP) meeting.

While Pawar has been elected as the NCP legislature party leader, Shinde has been conferred, by his party, all the powers to take a call on issues related to government formation.

Senior BJP leader and Colaba MLA Rahul Narwerkar, who was the Speaker in the previous Legislative Assembly, also said that the swearing-in ceremony would be held on December 5.

Once the BJP legislature party leader is elected and Shinde returns to Mumbai, the leaders of the Maha Yuti top brass would meet and give the final shape to the government.

The BJP LP meeting is expected to be held on Monday or Tuesday.

In the Assembly polls, the BJP has got 132 seats, while Shiv Sena 57 and NCP 41. Besides, BJP has support of five other MLAs who are independents or members of smaller parties.

Last week, Fadnavis, Shinde and Pawar had met Union Home Minister Amit Shah and Health and Family Welfare Minister and BJP President Jagat Prakash Nadda.

Shinde was keen on a second term or at least a rotational post of CM, however, the BJP has ruled it out.

Even Pawar was keen but numbers were not on his side.

The BJP high-command is in no mood to sacrifice the post of the CM this time as it has got a whopping 132 seats very close to the 145 magic figure.

In a related development, BJP's national general secretary Vinod Tawde, who hails from Maharashtra, called on Nadda in New Delhi.
