India jumps to 3rd position in global AI Vibrancy Index

Bengaluru: India has jumped four places in the last year and is now ranked 3rd globally in the Stanford University's 2025 Global AI Vibrancy Index. Only US and China are ahead of India, said Priyank Kharge, minister for IT/BT.

In a statement issued on Wednesday, he added that Karnataka has contributed a lot to this momentum.

"Karnataka is positioning India as an AI leader, with a strong AI and deeptech target, and the state's startup policy for 2025-30 has committed to providing Rs 518 crore to support 25,000 startups," he said.

The global ranking is based on several parameters including R&D, talent, responsible AI policy and infrastructure. India's rise in the ranking is due to strong research output, high patenting, growing AI job market and expanding digital infrastructure. In terms of talent, India is already ranked 2nd globally. This reflects the strength and depth of our AI workforce and education ecosystem, Kharge said.

The decade-long Rs 600 crore fund in the deep tech sector, the new IT Policy 2025-30 and institutions like the Art Park at IISc, the 9-acre BRAINZ (Bangalore Robotics and AI Innovation Zone) campus and the Rs 1,000 crore investment supported by accelerators in Tier-2 and Tier-3 cities together created a powerful policy-fund-COE cluster resource required to grow the country's export sector through AI R&D, he added.
