The 1984 polls saw the Congress using a variety of advertisements to woo voters after Indira Gandhi’s assassination. One of the advertisements read: “Will the country’s border finally be moved to your door step?”

Another read: “Will your grocery list in future include acid bulbs, iron rods and daggers?”

Some of the punchlines were prepared even before Indira’s death.

In 1989, the Congress’ catch lines were ‘give unity a hand’ and ‘my heart beats for India’.
