Two-thirds of West Bengal MLAs aged above 50

Nearly two-thirds of the West Bengal Assembly's sitting MLAs are between 51 and 80 years old, while the remaining legislators fall under the 25-50 years age bracket, a report published by the Association for Democratic Reforms (ADR) noted.

Of the 282 incumbent MLAs whose details were obtained for the study, ADR stated that 96 of them or 34 per cent fell under the 25-50 age bracket, while a whopping 186 of them or 66 per cent lawmakers were aged 50-80. One legislator, who did not fall under either bracket, is 91 years old, the study showed.

The report also contains data on the legislators' educational and financial backgrounds and has been released close to four weeks before West Bengal's electors hit the polling booth in an eight-phase election beginning on March 27 and ending on April 29.
