Ace poet Sahir Ludhianvi was arguably one of the finest lyricists associated with the Hindi film industry during its 'Golden Age'. The legend enjoyed a strong fan following due to his deeply philosophical brand of poetry and outspoken nature. He never hesitated to address burning issues with his work, which helped it strike a chord with the masses.

On Monday, as fans remember Sahir on his 100th birth anniversary, here is a look at five songs that bear testimony to his talent.

Aurat Ne Janam Diya (Sadhna, 1958)

Aurat Ne Janam Diya was sung by Lata Mangeshkar and highlighted the challenges faced by women in a selfish society. The song has attained a cult following over the years for projecting 'her' as the creator and guardian of life.

Main Zindagi Ka Saath (Hum Dono, 1961)

Hum Dono was an engaging drama that featured Dev Anand in a double role and revolved around the dynamics between two couples. The Main Zindagi Ka Saath song was sung by the legendary Mohammed Rafi and highlighted the need to move on while forgetting setbacks.

Na Munh Chhupake Jeeo (Hamraaz, 1967)

Humraaz starred ace actor Sunil Dutt in the lead and is widely regarded as one of the finest thrillers of its time. The film featured quite a few impressive songs with Na Munh Chhupake Jeeo being the pick of the lot. Its highly inspiring lyrics revolved around being proud of oneself irrespective of the circumstances. The general perception is that this was one of the most challenging songs of Sahir's career as Hamraaz had a layered narrative.

Woh Subah Kabhee Toh Aayegee (Phir Subah Hogi, 1968)

Phir Subah Hogi was a social drama that featured a top-notch cast headlined by 'The Showman' Raj Kapoor and ace actor Mala Sinha. The Woh Subah Kabhee Toh Aayegee song was one of the major highlights of the movie and dealt with the importance of being optimistic even during difficult times. It was superficially in the same zone as Na Munh Chhupake Jeeo.

Main Pal Do Pal Ka Shayar Hoon (Kabhie Kabhie, 1976)

The Khayyam-composed track featured highly relatable lyrics that touched upon the temporary nature of success while emphasising that no one is irreplaceable. Mukesh's impeccable voice added a new dimension to Sahir's lyrics, helping the song emerge as a hit. The title song of Kabhie Kabhie too became quite popular.
