Actor Vishal's latest movie Chakra, a 'spiritual successor' to his popular film Irumbu Thirai, has made a decent impact at the Chennai box office over the first weekend. The film's grossed around Rs 98 lakh in three days despite mixed reviews. While the figure is lower than the Rs 1.30 crore grossed by the Irumbu Thirai in its opening weekend, many feel this is not a cause for concern as the P S Mithran-helmed thriller had hit the screens in 'pre-Covid times'.

Chakra collected Rs 31 lakh on the opening day much to the delight of fans. It remained steady on Saturday and Sunday, witnessing limited growth. The general perception is that it might have done better had the word of mouth been positive as opposed to mixed.

The response to Chakra, either way, indicates that the Tamil film industry is on the verge of returning to 'normal' after the Covid-19 pandemic. Vijay's movie Master, which released during Pongal, did well at the box office while impressing the 'Thalapathy Army'. The Simbu-starrer Eeswaran, however, did not live up to the expectations as its execution was not as gripping as expected.

Coming back to Chakra, it is a thriller that revolves around digital theft/fraud. The film stars Shraddha Srinath as the leading lady and marks her first collaboration with Vishal. She previously impressed fans with her work in Nerkonda Paarvai, a remake of the Hindi film Pink. The star, however, suffered a bit of a setback when her film Maara, an adaptation of the Malayalam movie Charlie, released on an OTT platform as opposed to in theatres. It remains to be seen whether Chakra helps her consolidate her standing in Kollywood.

Vishal, meanwhile, is going through a busy phase on the work front. He will soon be seen in the Enemy, co-starring Arya. The star also has Thupparivaalan 2, which marks his directorial debut, in his kitty.
