Don't look at life in retrospect, says actor Kunal Kapoor on finding limited success in Bollywood

Kunal Kapoor did not find much success in Bollywood despite the positive response to 'Rang De Basanti'

Actor Kunal Kapoor, once regarded as one of the brightest young stars in Bollywood, says that he has no regrets as he does not believe in looking at life in retrospect.

"I do not look at life in retrospect. Whatever decisions I took back then (during the initial stages of his career) were the right ones at that point of time," he told DH in an exclusive interview.

Kunal, who began his acting career with a key role in the 2004 release Meenaxi, became the talk of the town when he acted alongside actor Aamir Khan in the cult film Rang De Basanti. The young star garnered a fair deal of attention with his striking screen presence and held his own against 'Mr Perfectionist'. While many thought it would open new avenues for him, the reality turned out to be different. He wasn't able to reach his potential as films such as Hattrick and Noblemen did not live up to expectations.

Lady luck finally smiled on him when he essayed the lead role in Mollywood director Jayaraj's magnum opus Veeram, garnering critical acclaim for his work.

"Veeram was a complex character and it became more challenging as we had to do it in three languages--Hindi, Malayalam and English." he added.

The actor is looking forward to continuing his tryst with 'complex' roles with his upcoming movie Koi Jaane Na, which is Lagaan actor Amin Hajee's directorial debut. Kunal says he took it up as he is a fan of thrillers.

"I have always enjoyed the thriller space a lot. The movie also features me in a grey character. Such a film is a challenge for an actor as you can't give away too much," he added.

The film's cast includes Mr X actor Amyra Dastur, Neha Mahajan, Viraf Patel and Rajendranath 'Raj' Zutshi. Koi Jaane Na is slated to hit the screens on April 5.
