The Special Investigation Team (SIT) looking into the massive drug racket unearthed by the Telangana Excise department recently, has sent notices to 14 Tollywood artists including heroes, directors, heroines, stunt masters and singers.

The SIT wanted them to be present before it within six days after receiving the notices. However, the officers are tight-lipped about the details of these Tollywood artists.

According to sources three young heroes who are looking out for chances at least one who is famous in TV shows, two heroines who are now accepting item songs were among the artists that received the notices sent under section 67 of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act 1985.

The SIT after digging into the call list of the main accused Calvin Mascrenhas, believe that many of these who were summoned by the SIT are end users and might not be drug peddlers. “They might have consumed drugs to beat depression caused by lack of opportunities,” an officer said. The artists were asked to bring all the evidence that they might have while meeting the SIT officers.

Meanwhile, the Telugu industry reacting to the developments, said that drug abuse by some persons has brought bad repute to the entire film industry.  Movie Artists Association (MAA), in a statement has said that a small number of drug abusers have put the entire Telugu film industry in bad light.

Prominent film producer Allu Aravind speaking to press said drugs cause immense damage to the families of the users. MAA has called for an awareness programme to educate young and unemployed artists about the dangers of drug abuse.
