In his death, labourer gives life to six people

The vital organs of a 44-year-old construction worker who was declared brain dead, were donated to save six lives, here on Sunday.

Puttegowda, a resident of Ketupura in Bannur hobli sustained grievous head injuries when he fell from the top of a building and was admitted to JSS hospital on Friday.

Since he did not respond to the treatment, Dr Guruswamy of the hospital convinced his family members to donate the organs. A team of doctors harvested the heart, lungs, eyes and kidneys of Puttegowda. The ambulance carrying the organs left Mysuru at 6.15 am and reached Bengaluru at 9 am. The traffic police had created a green corridor for the ambulance.

While the heart was donated to Narayana Hrudayalaya, lungs were given to Aster CMI Hospital. A kidney was handed over to Victoria Hospital and the JSS Hospital retained a kidney and both eyes.

Puttegowda and his wife are uneducated and were eking our livelihood as construction labourers. The couple have two daughters, Dr Guruswamy said.
