Houses for flood victims to be ready in 3 months

The state government will perform groundbreaking for the construction of houses for flood victims in Kodagu district on December 7.

Chief Minister H D Kumaraswamy will perform the groundbreaking at Madapura in Somwarpet taluk.

The district administration, using the latest technology, will complete the work on the construction of 840 houses within three months.

Various agencies, that were selected for the project, have constructed six model houses on the land identified for the rehabilitation of victims at K Nidugani.

Among them, the model house constructed by Rajiv Gandhi Rural Housing Corporation has been selected for the victims. The government will construct 2 BHK houses for the victims.

Special Additional Deputy Commissioner Jagadish said that as per NDRF guidelines, only Rs 6 lakh can be spent for construction of each house. But considering Kodagu as a special case, the government will spend Rs 10 lakh on construction of each house.

Already 110 acres of land has been identified at K Nidugane, Karnangeri, Galibeedu, Made, Biligeri, Sampaje and Jambooru for the rehabilitation of the victims.

The houses will be constructed on 30X40 site. Shear wall technology will be used for the construction of the houses. The houses will have earthquake and natural calamity resistance.

The houses will have RCC roof, vitrified tiles for floor, glazed ceramic tiles for bathroom and windows and doors to suit the environment in Kodagu along with water tank facilities.

The Rajiv Gandhi Rural Housing Corporation has already constructed a one -bedroom model house. The chief minister, local MLAs and victims have finalised the same model.

Kudekal Santhosh, a flood victim, said, "I inspected the model house which was constructed. There are no facilities to keep the clothes and other items in the house."

Victims to protest

Demanding compensation, Prakrithika Vikopa Horata Samithi, Madikeri, will take out a protest rally on December 7.

At least 2,000 people from Jodupala, Madenadu, Makkandoor, Emmethal and Meghathal villages are likely to take part.

Samithi president M B Devaiah has urged the state government to release a white paper on the amount collected under the CM Relief Fund.
