<p>Guwahati: An MLA of Opposition All India United Democratic Front (<a href="https://www.deccanherald.com/tags/aiudf">AIUDF</a>) in Assam, Aminul Islam, was arrested on Thursday on charges of making a "misleading and instigating" statement following the Pahalgam terrorist attack.</p><p>The MLA, who represents Dhing Assembly constituency in central Assam's Nagaon district, was arrested a day after he allegedly stated that the attack was a conspiracy of BJP to target the Muslims.</p><p>Assam police said a case was registered against Islam at Nagaon police station as his statement was found to have potential to create an "adverse situation." </p><p>He has been booked under section 152/196/197(1)/113(3)/352/353 Bharatiya Nyay Samhita. The Section 152 carries the charges similar to sedition.</p><p>Informing about Islam's arrest, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma told reporters in Guwahati that Islam's statement was found to be defending Pakistan.</p>.<p>"In this situation, we are trying to take action against anyone trying, directly or indirectly, to defend Pakistan after the terror attack. The AIUDF has 16 MLAs in the House of 126. BJP and its allies have been in power in the state since 2016. </p>
